Tip: How to catch a house fly

House flies are pesky creatures and prone to spreading harmful thing via their legs which pick up harmful things when they land on dog poo etc. And they have compound eyes which are extremely good at detecting motion. That is why flies are especially jumpy creatures that take off at the slightest (reference: WHAT DO FLIES SEE OUT OF THEIR COMPOUND EYE?)

So how do you catch a fly? Here is how I do it. Because they are so good at detecting motion, don't try to catch them while they are flying. Wait for them to settle on a surface then place your palm horizontally on both sides of the fly and very slowly approach. When you are close enough, quickly slap your palms together. The fly will try to escape vertically but because your palms are already very close and slammed closed together it will be too late for the fellow and it will get squashed between your palm.

Then just dispose of it into the rubbish bin and go wash your hands with soap and running water.

There is another way if you don't want to use your hands. Go buy a coconut broom (see picture at left). Also go buy those gooey sticky stuff for trapping rats. Get a stick, dip it into the can of sticky rat trap, pull it and you will get a long thin tube of glue. Twirl it round the stick and stick the free end into something to hold the stick vertical. Once a fly land on it, it will be stuck unable to fly away.
